Bayer, the world’s leading pharmaceutical company, has signed a licensing agreement for the generic version of Cialis®, a well-known brand name for the drug. The agreement marks the first generic version of Cialis® to enter the market and represents a major milestone in the pharmaceutical industry’s efforts to make Cialis® more affordable and accessible to consumers.

The exclusive rights will also allow Bayer to further expand its product portfolio in Europe and to enter the marketplace as a generic product. The agreement will further strengthen Bayer’s position as one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the world and is a critical step in the advancement of the future of Cialis® as a first-in-class generic drug.
The agreement comes as Bayer’s patent for Cialis® expires in 2017 and its generic product is due to hit the market in 2018.
Bayer has exclusive rights to market and market the generic version of Cialis® to more than 125 million consumers worldwide. Cialis® is the world’s top-selling diabetes drug, and is expected to remain the leading brand name for the diabetes medication in the U. S. for 20 years. The drug is currently manufactured by several major pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis AG (“Novartis”), Gilead Sciences, GSK, Apotex and Apotex A/S.
